- Description
Vintage Hawaiian made soprano Ukulele. Age unknown but my guess would be 1920s. Born in Honolulu on October 13th, 1874, Jonah Kumalae was a prominent Hawaiian politician, businessman, publisher and accomplished musician. He began making ukuleles in 1911 and is considered to be one of the most prolific ukulele manufacturers of his time. His ukuleles were made of locally sourced Koa wood, brought over from the Big Island. Eclectic 1960s artist Tiny Tim (most noted for his rendition of the song 'Tip Toe through the Tulips') owned a Kumalae ukulele. Jonah Kumalae died on May 6, 1940 aged 65 years.
